Games Like Strands is made by the team behind Gamefinity, a site of free games that start in a second in your browser. We write and check every page here ourselves.

Not affiliated with Strands or The New York Times Company. We name Strands only to say what this guide compares against, and we link to Strands itself so you can always play the original.

How we pick and test games

For this guide we checked each game against the parts of Strands that make it satisfying: paths through a grid of letters, a theme that ties the answers together, and a board that ends with nothing left over. We opened every game on its maker's own site or official store page, read its rules and prices there, and noted which of those three things it keeps. We judged our own two games by exactly the same standard, and their entries say where they fall short.

Every game on the guide was opened on its maker's own site (or its official store page) on the date shown beside it, where we confirmed that it exists, what it is, what it costs and where it runs. We write what it is, why it is like Strands and what is different in our own words. We take no payment or free copies for a place on the list, and nothing here is an ad. When a game changes, closes or starts charging, we update or remove it.

Our own games on the list

2 of the 13 picks (Letter Grid, Word Search Rush) are games we make. They carry a "Made by us · Gamefinity" label everywhere they appear, their Play links go to gamefinity.io, and they get the same rating scale as everything else. We only include one of ours where it is a fair answer to "what should I play if I like Strands?", and we say what it does worse as well as what it does well.

How the ratings work

Ratings are ours, out of 5, in halves. They rate each game as a pick for someone who likes Strands: how close the fun is, how well it plays on a phone and a computer, how fair its price or ads are, and how much of it there is. They are not review scores collected from anywhere else.
